Bursting discs are typically used as non-reclosing safety
pressure relief devices. Manufactured from metal or graphite and
designed to open at a preset pressure, bursting discs instantly
alleviate potentially dangerous pressure build up. Bursting discs,
sometimes known as rupture discs, offer a number of advantages over
other forms of pressure relief:
In addition to being used as pressure relief devices,
they are often used as a leak tight seal on a system, or as a
mechanical pressure switch. In certain applications a bursting disc
may be used as the sole relief device or it may also be used in
conjunction with a relief valve. Commonly used in the chemical,
petrochemical and pharmaceutical process industries bursting discs
are also found in a variety of products from rocket launchers to
fuel injection systems and from fire extinguishers to aircraft
tyres.
